Since mid of last year many of the customers of LPG companies have been getting messages from their respective companies/distributors requesting them to surrender their subsidy and to contribute in the growth of the nation.
However many of the consumers who could afford to surrender; registered their name in the surrender list; but others showed displeasure and confusion over the initiative. State owned oil companies and petroleum ministry also urged citizens with comfortable income to opt out of subsidy.
The reason cited for the initiative is that the subsidy given by the government for LPG costs estimated amount of around Rs 46,000 Carore per year to the Indian government. This amount could be used to develop a better infrastructure in the country if the subsidy is opted out by the consumers. Though this information was not known among general people and all this system, hence they felt little confused.
On the other hand many consumers form different cities who are able to pay for the LPG price without subsidy have enrolled in the initiative and many of them are even happy because according to them the subsidy should be used by needy consumers only. Most of them are from the upper class of society and they will be paying the market price for their respective LPG supply.
The majority of the customers who have opted out for subsidy are from the states of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan Madhya Pradesh Delhi, and Kerala. The idea also getting more attention in recent days and many other states have also started working on this cause for better management and infrastructure. Many of the consumers are also making aware others including friends and relatives to be a part of the initiative surrender the subsidy.
